About

Southbound is a pop project around vocalist, (song)writer and composer Roufaida Aboutaleb (20). Southbound is a crossover art project, as it features musical, lyrical and visual aspects. Debut single + video ‘Feathers’ is in stores worldwide starting february 2015. Sounds like: Electronic minimalism stirred by dark guitar drones and strong vocal urgency. (Little Dragon, Fink.) The scandinavian darkness inspired Southbound to a gloomy, melancholic and sometimes uncomfortable sound, blending acoustics and electrics, always relying on musical simplicity.

Roufaida gathered different artists together to create an all-embracing art project with her songs as starting-point. The music and lyrics are written by Roufaida, and arranged and played with musicians from all over Europe. Photographer Eli Dijkers (NL) and painter, artist, and dancer Andrea Renon (NL) got involved as they created the visual identity of Southbound. Eli Dijkers is responsible for the pictures used in the artwork. Andrea Renon paints drawings to which the lyrics are written, and adds graceful movement to the live performances and music videos. The drawings and pictures strengthen the lyrics and music, and Andrea’s final interpretation of the music – by dancing to it - forms an extra dimension to the songs.

What's in the name? Southbound (adj): going or leading towards the south.
‘Southbound’ is a direction or movement without definite destination, and that is exactly Roufaida’s thought on the collective. Southbound is a constant conversation between art forms, a never-ending road on which many interesting landscapes are to be discovered. Born on the northern part of the world, but with southern blood, Southbound is driven by curiosity and eagerness to explore her possibilities.
